Palazzo Moderno — Atrio, the tall entry; clerestory, no fixture below 3 m
(01)Atriothe tall entry

The full height is met immediately. A marble console, a mirror leaned rather than hung, and nothing else — so the room is read vertically before it is read at all.

Palazzo Moderno — Salone, the long room; two tall windows, sheer linen
(02)Salonethe long room

One four-metre sofa on the long wall, a marble table, and a rug that stops well short of the walls so the floor plane stays visible under the height.

(03)Tavolaunder the pendant run

A ten-seat table set beneath three pendants hung at 1.5 m — low enough to draw a horizontal line across the volume and leave the ceiling to itself.

The curationDescription

Four and a half metres of ceiling, and not one piece of furniture that reaches past a metre. The height is the subject; everything else defers to it.

Palazzo Moderno answers the one problem a tall room actually has: filled badly, height reads as emptiness. The curation keeps every horizontal line low and unbroken — a long sofa back at 680mm, a console at 750mm, art hung at seated eye level — so the wall above is left to do its work uninterrupted.

The palette is deliberately thin: pale lime plaster, grey-veined marble, one dark timber. Because there are only three surfaces, the eye travels upward rather than around, which is the whole point of a room built this way.

Palazzo Moderno — Light directive: Nothing lit above three metres. The height stays dark and the room stays tall.
(01)LightDirective

Nothing lit above three metres. The height stays dark and the room stays tall.

Daylight enters high and is diffused by sheer linen; artificial light is kept at table and floor level, with three low pendants as the only fittings in the volume. The upper wall is never washed, because a lit ceiling collapses the height it is meant to reveal.

(02)MaterialDirective

Pale lime plaster, grey-veined marble, one walnut. Three surfaces, no more.

Plaster carries the volume and is left slightly cloudy so the wall has depth at distance. Marble appears only as horizontal tops. Walnut is book-matched and used for everything that stores, which keeps the dark tone at low level where it belongs.

(03)FormDirective

Every horizontal line stays under a metre and runs long.

The sofa is four metres and low; the sideboard is two and a half and low. Long, unbroken horizontals read as calm against a tall wall, where a cluster of small pieces would read as clutter.

(04)FurnitureDirective

Wool bouclé, leather and walnut — one weight each, repeated.

Upholstery is a single undyed wool bouclé; seating leather is one hide colour across ten chairs. Nothing is patterned, so the veining in the marble is the only figure in the room.
